STORY
The Carlyle is one of Ocean Drive's most beloved Art Deco hotels and one of the most personal works in Charlotte's Structural Series.
Using her signature multi layer photographic technique, Charlotte builds the artwork from her own photographs of the hotel and its surroundings, composited the way a film editor assembles a scene: not a single captured moment, but a constructed memory. The white geometric façade rises through the frame, its vertical pilasters and decorative grilles softened by the palm leaves that drift across the upper layers. Below, the outdoor terrace settles into the composition with its closed umbrellas, wicker chairs, and potted plants. In the foreground, the beach pulls into view, dozens of small figures lying in the sand, towels spread, the day in full sun. And then the hotel's name, twice. Once small in red script above the entrance, where it has lived for decades. Once again at the base of the artwork, large and ghosted across the sand, the way a place writes itself into memory after you have walked past it a hundred times.
Look longer and the artwork keeps giving: a hint of ocean water on the edge of the frame, figures half-hidden in the layers, details that only surface on a second or third look.
The result is not a photograph of The Carlyle. It is The Carlyle as it is felt and remembered.
This work is part of The Structural Series, Charlotte Fonne's ongoing exploration of Miami Beach's iconic Art Deco hotels, also featured in Lumas galleries worldwide.
