STORY
Uros Islands is built from Charlotte's own photographs of the floating reed islands of the Indigenous Uros people, on Lake Titicaca in Peru.
Using her signature multi layer photographic technique, Charlotte composites many of her own frames into one image, the way a film editor assembles a scene from many takes. The islands are made in layers too. The Uros people lay down totora reeds, and as the bottom ones rot in the lake, they add new ones on top.
The houses are reed as well. The layering stacks many of them one over another at the water's edge. A small reed boat crosses the lake. Two other boats come through: a large one, almost dissolved, above the houses, and a smaller one below them.
The largest figure is a woman in a red jacket and a hat, seen from behind. She was steering the boat Charlotte was on. The reeds and the clouds show through her.
Charlotte remembers the islands full of sun and light. The sky and the lake were deep blue, and the gold of the reeds stood out against it. The sun in the artwork comes from AmantanĂ, a nearby island where 2 hilltop temples honor Pachamama and Pachatata, Mother Earth and Father Earth. Charlotte photographed it late in the day, by the stone arch of one of them.
The other colors came from the traditional dress. In the artwork, tiny figures of women in red, pink, yellow, blue, green and brown stand along the island. The longer you look, the more of them you find.
At the center, in the clouds, one woman is bigger than the rest. She stands for all of them, in a green blouse and a hat.
This work is part of The Breathe Series, Charlotte Fonne's landscapes and cityscapes, where a place is felt with all its hours and even days together.
