STORY
The Cavalier is one of the most unmistakable Art Deco hotels on Ocean Drive. The one with the colorful geometric panels running down its front.
Using her signature multi layer photographic technique, Charlotte builds the artwork from her own photographs of the hotel and the life around it. The white façade rises through the center of the frame, its symmetry holding the composition together. The Cavalier's signature ornament, the Art Deco panels carved in red, green and yellow into the central spine of the building and the columns on either side, pulls the eye up to the sign at the top. The hotel's name sits there in large lettering, and again in a close-up Charlotte layered into the sky above the building, the name floating where the architecture stops. Jungle flame flowers drift across the whole image, threaded through palm leaves and tree branches on either side. Below, the daily life of Ocean Drive settles in with white café umbrellas and people gathered at the tables. Further down still, the beach opens up, sunbathers on the sand and the soft glow of the ocean reflecting through.
Look longer and the artwork keeps giving. Faces half-hidden in the composition, flowers that seem to move depending on where you stand, details that only surface on a second or third look.
The result is not a photograph of The Cavalier. It is The Cavalier as it lives between the trees on Ocean Drive.
This work is part of The Structural Series, Charlotte's ongoing exploration of Miami Beach's iconic Art Deco hotels, each piece composed from photographs she takes herself on Ocean Drive.
Each image in the composition is personally photographed by Charlotte, ensuring a genuine and unique piece. Signed, numbered, and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
