STORY
The Cavalier is an Art Deco hotel on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach, built from Charlotte's own photographs of the hotel and its surroundings.
Using her signature multi layer photographic technique, Charlotte layers many of her own frames over the facade, kept straight and square, the way a film editor holds one shot and cuts the life of a scene around it.
Red jungle flame flowers and green trees frame the white facade and cross it, picking up the red and green of its Art Deco panels.
Below, white umbrellas shade the café tables on the sidewalk. At the bottom, the orange of a beach umbrella meets the turquoise of the ocean, with people's shadows on the sand.
The name appears twice. Once cut into the wall at the top of the facade. Once across the sky, the same sign brought in close, with a faint close up of the panels around it. A detail you keep in mind is not the size it was.
This work is part of The Structural Series, Charlotte Fonne's Miami Art Deco hotels, where each facade stands still while the life of South Beach drifts around it. On Ocean Drive, when you face a hotel, the beach is behind you. Here you see both.
Each image in the composition is personally photographed by Charlotte, ensuring a genuine and unique piece. Signed, numbered, and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
