STORY
Rhodes, Island of Sun is the harbor and Old Town of Rhodes in Greece, built from Charlotte's own photographs of the island.
Using her signature multi layer photographic technique, Charlotte composites many of her own frames into one image, the way a film editor assembles a scene from many takes. One photograph gives the artwork its structure. Charlotte took it standing under the arcade of the Palace of the Grand Master, looking out into the courtyard: three pointed arches, statues along the far side, a patterned stone floor. The arches run the full height of the artwork and everything else arrives inside them. The floor is still at the bottom. A doorway has become the thing you look through.
The middle arch holds the harbor. The Fortress of Agios Nikolaos comes through with its round tower, and the wall of the old town comes through the fortress, with ivy on its stone. Two places at opposite ends of town, in the same piece of sky.
Palms cross the arches at every height, from two photographs with different trees in each. Some of the magenta is bougainvillea off the old town wall. The rest is what happens where the layers cross.
The dreamcatcher sits over the arch on the left. Charlotte found it hanging in a market stall in the old town, lit from behind. Its feathers reach all the way down to the bottom of the frame.
Along the right the harbor runs on, boats tied up along the water with stone walls above them.
Two of the photographs are of the sea, and no water shows anywhere in the artwork. They are in it for the color.
In the dark under the fortress, on the right, a statue from the palace courtyard is still standing. It is the hardest thing here to find.
The whole town arrives through one doorway, in full sun.
