STORY
Pacific Park is the amusement park on the Santa Monica Pier in California, built from Charlotte's own photographs of the pier and the beach beside it, in the evening light.
Using her signature multi layer photographic technique, Charlotte composites many of her own frames into one image, the way a film editor assembles a scene from many takes. Here the beach and the rides mix.
Charlotte remembers the crowd: people walking, taking rides, enjoying the beach. Those walking on the pier are the sharpest part of the artwork. Riders on the West Coaster go by over their heads, arms up, and the coaster track crosses the artwork 3 times. Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. has palm leaves laid across its wall like shadows.
That evening the sunset turned everything pink, and the pink stays. The pier comes back a second time, photographed from the beach, small and easy to miss on the left. The buildings along the shore balance it on the right.
The Ferris wheel at the center fills the sky, pale, with Pacific Park written on its hub and the sunset glowing yellow just above the name. The people who watched the sunset from the water's edge stand inside the wheel. Other people from the beach show up small, at the foot of the pier and as tiny figures on the sand.
She went because everyone has seen this place in movies: Pacific Park alone has appeared in more than 500 films and TV shows. And after days in Los Angeles, it was good to be by the ocean. It felt light, happy and playful, and peaceful too.
This work is part of The Breathe Series, Charlotte Fonne's landscapes and cityscapes, where a place is felt with all its hours and even days together.
Each image in the composition is personally photographed by Charlotte, ensuring a genuine and unique piece. Signed, numbered, and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
