STORY
Old State House is the oldest surviving public building in Boston, built from Charlotte's own photographs of it and of the buildings around it.
Using her signature multi layer photographic technique, Charlotte moves around the monument and layers views from many angles onto one surface, the way a film editor cuts a scene together from different shot scales and camera setups. Here she circled what surrounds it instead. Every photograph was taken looking straight up, so the buildings tilt inward toward an opening of sky, and the Old State House sits at the bottom of that funnel.
The layering runs the buildings through each other until the glass goes transparent. It barely touches the Old State House. A little arrives on the brick and no more, because the building has stood still for three hundred years and the artwork treats it that way. Red brick, three stories, finished in 1713, a clock on the gable and a white cupola behind it. It is the smallest thing in the frame and the only solid one.
On the roof, a gold lion and a white unicorn: the arms of the British crown. The originals were pulled down and burned in the street in 1776. These are their replacements, back on the same roof.
Below them is the balcony. The Declaration of Independence was read from it in July 1776, to the crowd standing where there are offices now. On the day Charlotte photographed it, a rainbow flag was hanging there. The same balcony, two hundred and fifty years apart, still being used to say who is free.
This building has been here through the massacre outside its door, the revolution, and a fire that gutted it. The city grew up around it. It did not move.
This work is part of The Broken Series, Charlotte Fonne's tribute to the Cubist painters, where the world's iconic monuments are circled and gathered onto a single surface.
