STORY
Meknes Medina is built from Charlotte's own photographs of Morocco, taken in and around the imperial cities of Meknes and Fez.
Using her signature multi layer photographic technique, Charlotte composites many of her own frames into one image, the way a film editor assembles a scene from many takes. The people in it are silhouettes, at 2 scales. Across the top half they pass close, near enough to see the white collar at a man's neck. Below them, the crowd in El Hedim Square is small and far off. That man was walking in the same square. Here he is taller than all of it.
The movement is what Charlotte kept from these streets. Even the laundry moves: a red shirt blowing on a line in Fez. The red came through. The blue of a djellaba and of the sky did not.
Across the middle runs a band of tiles from Bab el-Khemis, a 17th century gate in Meknes. Below it, 2 dark silhouettes photographed in Fez stand over the crowd.
What remains of both cities is the color of their walls and the people walking past them.
This work is part of The Breathe Series, Charlotte Fonne's landscapes and cityscapes, where a place is felt with all its hours and even days together.
Each image in the composition is personally photographed by Charlotte, ensuring a genuine and unique piece. Signed, numbered, and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
