STORY
Colosseo is the Colosseum in Rome, built from Charlotte's own photographs of it, from outside and from inside.
Using her signature multi layer photographic technique, Charlotte moves around the monument and layers views from many angles onto one surface, the way a film editor cuts a scene together from different shot scales and camera setups. Here she went around the outside and then went in, so the outer wall and the inner ring sit in the same frame. There is nowhere in Rome you can stand and see both.
The Colosseum is an ellipse. Circling it gives back the same curve over and over, each time from a different height, and those curves stack into bands running the full width of the artwork. The three levels are still there. The layering has moved them.
Arches fill everything between them. The same shape repeats at different sizes across every band, some dark and open, some pale where a layer sits behind them.
The color comes out of the layering, and it stays true to the building: light orange at one end of the range, dark brown at the other.
People are at the center of the artwork. They come from different layers, so they were never there at the same time.
This is not the Colosseum as it looks from any one seat. It is the whole ring of it, brought into a single frame.
This work is part of The Broken Series, Charlotte Fonne's tribute to the Cubist painters, where the world's iconic monuments are circled and gathered onto a single surface.
Each image in the composition is personally photographed by Charlotte, ensuring a genuine and unique piece. Signed, numbered, and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
