STORY
Mayan Warrior is a portrait of a young man dressed as a Mayan warrior, built from Charlotte's own photographs of him and of the Tulum ruins in Mexico. He posed for her, and they laughed together.
Using her signature multi layer photographic technique, Charlotte composites many of her own frames into one image, the way a film editor assembles a scene from many takes. He stands in the middle, arms stretched wide, holding out a cape of feathers. An owl headdress comes down to his nose, its 2 round eyes set above his own. His face is painted black and white, with stripes and spirals across the mouth.
Most of the blue comes from the Caribbean at Tulum, turned from turquoise to deep blue by the layering. The photographs of the ruins are in it too, mostly as a rough gray stone texture running through the feathers and down his body. One doorway still shows, at the upper left.
The left and right edges are full of costume. Dark brushstrokes of paint and a row of shell pendants on one side. Spotted fur and a skull full of teeth on the other. They belong to 2 more men, whose heads are out of the frame. Only their bodies show, from the chest down.
Three men are in this portrait, and only one of them is looking at you.
This work is part of The Reflection Series, Charlotte Fonne's portraits of place, where a person is layered with the place they were in, remembered rather than recorded.
Each image in the composition is personally photographed by Charlotte, ensuring a genuine and unique piece. Signed, numbered, and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
